Kids groovin' to the music

WHAT IS Kids’ Jam?

About Kids’ Jam

Learning music is fun in a community of music-making families. Kids’ Jam, designed for children ages 5-7 and their parents/caregivers, provides a natural extension to the Music Together curriculum. Our drum circle of African djembes focuses the children for singing, solfege, hand signs, and verbal and written rhythm patterns. These help the child achieve or solidify basic music competency, completing their readiness for formal instrument instruction later on. Fun - and often quite boisterous - singing games, a core part of key music educators’ curriculum for this age group, keep these active kids moving for a good part of the class while broadening their musical experience and reinforcing basic skills. The curriculum is based on the teachings of music educators Kodaly, Gordon, and Dalcroze.

Kids’ Jam Repertoire

The new Kids' Jam repertoire is drawn from traditional songs and songs composed by Lui specifically for the program. The collections feature songs about the natural world and celebrate seasonal changes.

The recordings of the songs are done in the studio under the capable hand of brilliant multi-instrumentalist / producer Anand Nayak (of Rani Arbo and daisy mayhem fame). They feature Lui and Anand on vocals and a variety of instruments including guitar, banjo, slide guitar and mandolin, and are getting rave reviews from current Kids’ Jam families.

A Family Activity

Parent involvement is an important element in a child’s music learning process. Kids’ Jam is ideal for Home Schooling families, and we offer a special Home Schoolers’ mixed-age class in Shelburne Falls at noon on Tuesday. Older or younger siblings may be incorporated into any of our other classes as well, on an individual basis; please ask if you are interested.
